CHAPTER 11

HELPING RAUL

"You said there might be a way to save Raul," Andrew started, once Michelle and his mother were out of reach.

"It's not exactly..."

"You were about to tell us a possible way!" Dora interrupted, giving him a threatening look. "Right before we got that emergency call; you said that maybe there was actually something!"

"Well, yes," Whitetaker sighted. "But we’re talking about a very long shot here. And, a pretty risky one."

"Spit it out!" Captain Richardson ordered, back in military mode.

"All right," the doctor replied, defeated. "We have many research teams here, studying magical diseases and try searching for new cures. The team that I personally lead is focused on the Magic Forest, and its magical plants. Considering that the Forest expands relentlessly and most of it is still unexplored, statistically speaking, there are very good odds that we can find new cures in there. My team spends most of its time there, and regularly returns with samples which we then analyze here. Six months ago, they returned with a Magic orchid that was found in a very wild area of the forest. It was given to them by a friendly tribe of native Americans who’ve been there for over five hundred years near a portal in the forest where they’d taken refuge after the invasion of the British. According to what we know, their leader was a powerful shaman who made great medical discoveries in that area of the forest, the orchid being the most important one. It seems capable of clearing auras from any type of dark magic, and restoring its balance."

"It 'seems'?" Joey asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, the flower is rather rare, so we were only able to collect a couple of samples that we tested with the aura machines. At the time, we didn't have any patients to try it on. However, the results were very encouraging, to a point that another expedition is expected to leave next month to collect more. Obviously, with this emergency with your friend, time is of the essence, but I don't think ..."

"WE'LL GO!" Andrew roared, nearly jumping on his bed.

"Mr. Coulter, it's risky and, you gentlemen have not fully recovered yet. Plus, there is only a fifty percent chance that the orchid would work for Mr. Duchamp."

"But, it is still a chance," Joey interrupted him, as determined as his brother. "You heard what Ms. Nuduruchi said, that out friend is the most powerful elemental wizard of the East Coast. We’re facing a massive crisis; we can't afford to lose someone like him! Plus, personally, we owe him our lives; Raul wouldn't be in this condition, had it not been for that spell with the moss."

"Which was my idea," Dora said, looking sad. "It's all my fault. I've dragged everyone into this awful situation. I should come too."

"It's not your fault, captain!" Andrew replied. "How can you even think it is? ..."

"It is and you know it. I take full responsibility and ..."

"Now, please you two!" Whitetaker cut them off. "Captain Richardson, you did the best you could with what you had.
